August

The month when summer stretches out and lazily considers turning into autumn. Evening light through the leaf canopy creates vignettes on the forest floor. High contrast, deep shadows and brilliant highlights add to the drama.

The days are hot and the evenings cool. Take a walk through Birklands along Broad Drive at dusk and feel bands of warm and cool air passing over you as the forest breathes. [OS ref SK 61299 67743].

Listen for the calls of owls and, as night falls over Budby South Forest, the throaty cu-wick call of the nightjar. If you hear a clapping noise it’s probably a male clapping his wings together in flight.
